About Us

South Jefferson Elementary is a K-5 public elementary school located on thirteen acres of historic land that was originally owned by Charles Washington. The original building was constructed in 1971 and consolidated the three elementary schools in Rippon, Middleway and Summit Point. There have been four major additions to the building with the most recent in 2010 adding nine classrooms, a teacher workroom and student restrooms. Our school was also awarded an Innovation Grant in 2011 which provided the funding for an outdoor classroom and trail that surrounds the playground of our school.

Our dedicated, caring teachers and staff members are innovative, energetic and committed to providing an excellent academic experience for our students. There is an atmosphere of collaboration and team spirit at South Jefferson as teachers work together within, as well as across, grade levels, providing an educational program that challenges all students. Emphasis is placed on character development and high expectations for all. We strive to be safe, respectful and responsible in our community and adhere to the following rules: “Respect Yourself”, “Respect Others” and “Respect our School”. Our school's mission statement, which was collaboratively created by staff members, community members, parents and students is "to enthusiastically work in partnership with parents, students and community members to challenge and motivate our students to become caring, responsible and productive citizens in a global society. We will inspire our students to believe in themselves and their ability to achieve their dreams. We will empower each student with the skills, knowledge and desire necessary for continued learning within a safe, positive and nurturing environment".

Curriculum decisions are based on data from various assessments and school and District standards are aligned with West Virginia’s state standards in reading and language, writing, math, science, social studies and technology. Our students are provided instruction to facilitate the mastery of basic skills, to problem solve, to make decisions, and to practice higher level thinking skills.

Our school is an important part of the surrounding community. There are many ways for families and community members to become involved at South Jefferson Elementary. The best is through our PTO (Parent Teacher Organization). Our PTO works to support our students’ education through volunteerism and financial support from fundraising. PTO meetings and events are held throughout the year.
