Ms. Mahoney, Principal

Ms. Mahoney is both honored and excited to be the new principal of South Jefferson Elementary!  She began her career at South Jefferson Elementary in 1997 as a third grade teacher after graduating from Shepherd University. She taught both third and fifth grade before obtaining her Master's Degree in Curriculum and Instruction from Shepherd University in 2006 and then her Administration certification from West Virginia University in 2007. Ms. Mahoney stepped into the role of Head Teacher in 2008. In her tenure, she has witnessed South Jefferson expanding from a school of under 300 students to over 500 students and quickly becoming one of the largest elementary schools in Jefferson County. When asked about her job at South Jefferson, she states, "Every morning, when I walk through the doors of South Jefferson, I feel a sense of pride and love for the job that I do. Mrs. Payne, Assistant Principal

Mrs. Payne has come to SJE with Roadrunner-eagerness to be part of the distinguished and reputable staff and students of dedicated families.  She grew up in Illinois and received her Bachelor's Degree in Education with a concentration in reading-language arts as well as in math at Western Illinois University. Mrs. Payne moved to Wheeling, WV where she married and taught at a Catholic school for two years.  She spent six years in Bridgeport, WV as a day care provider in her home to teachers' children as she raised her three daughters.  Upon moving to Martinsburg, WV, she taught at My Little Preschool in Bethel Church for several years before she taught at Martinsburg's South Middle School for the next 13 years.  As a lover of education, she received a Master's Degree from WVU in reading and became a reading specialist in 2012.  One more degree was earned from Maryland's Hood College in 2016 in Leadership and Administration.  Mrs. Payne looks forward to the years ahead in these purple and yellow hallways helping the staff and students find success always in all ways!  To contact Mrs. Payne, you may email her at
